A basic and free email client is called Sylpheed. This software is compatible with Windows, Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X. The author's website offers the code, which is open for distribution and modification. Sylpheed accomplishes everything a decent email client should. Because it was intended to be a lightweight client, it will only produce plain text messages.
